Exploring South Point on the Big Island

South Point, also known as Ka Lae (the point in Hawaiian)  is the southernmost point of the Big Island and of all 50 states in the United States. It is believed that Polynesians, the descendants of Native Hawaiians, landed here first and made it their home. It’s now designated as a National Historic Landmark.

It has a great view of the open ocean. It’s also on the way to Green Sand Beach – one of the best hikes on the island.

How to get to South Point:

It’s at the end of South Point Road, 12 miles south of Hawaii Route 11 (Hawaii Belt Road).

You’ll find locals fishing and brave swimmers performing acrobats in this popular cliff-jumping spot. According to the locals, it’s about 30 feet deep. The area is known for strong winds and dangerous currents. It’s not advisable to go in the water during rough conditions.

Important note: There are no railings so be careful especially if you’re traveling with kids.

You can see the wind farm in the far distance.

There’s nothing but ocean between here and Antarctica.
