Malasadas From Tex Drive In | Big Island Eats

Malasadas box

Malasadas are Hawaiian donuts that were introduced to the island by Portuguese immigrants. It’s made of yeasty and eggy dough that’s deep fried and then rolled on a bed of sugar. Although a traditional malasadas is simple and doesn’t contain any filling, you can get some with Bavarian cream, guava, custard, raspberry, and mango. Paired with a hot cup of coffee or chocolate, it’s the perfect breakfast food or snack.

One of the best places to get these fluffy delights is at the Tex Drive In where they make them from scratch. There’s also a viewing area where you can watch the staff make it. It’s located in Honokaa and it’s a perfect stopover before our next destination: The Waipio Valley.

Tex Drive in Malasadas

We were at Tex Drive-In around noon when we decided to try their lunch menu.

We ordered the kalua pork which is the Hawaiian version of a pulled pork. Kalua means cooked in an underground oven called imu. A whole pig, lined with banana leaves, is put over a fire pit with hot rocks and then covered with banana leaves and sand where it will cook for hours. I think ours was just cooked in a kitchen. It’s good though!
