Sand Sledding at White Sands National Monument

Sand sledding at White Sands National Monument is one of the most fun things to do in New Mexico.

Some interesting information about this natural wonder:

• It’s 275 square miles of white gypsum sand.
• It’s the largest gypsum field in the world.
• Ranchers used to graze cattle in the area until the U.S. military took over and built facilities for scientific research and technological development.
• Movies like Young Guns II (1990) and Transformers (2007) were filmed at White Sands.
• It’s open year round except December 25.

The visit

We went during the winter and stayed at a hotel in Alamogordo, New Mexico. It’s 16 miles away from the White Sands.

We stopped by the visitor center where we bought a sled (don’t forget the wax!). You can rent one too, I believe.

The place is massive. You can pretty much choose a spot, park your car, and find a good hill to go sand sledding.

We walked a little ways, away from people.

The sand is pretty compact in the winter making it easier to hike on.

Tips

1. They close the park during missile testings nearby so contact the monument to make sure.
2. Bring lots of food and water especially during the summer to avoid unfortunate incidents. 
3. If hiking, carry a map  and compass with you and take note of landmarks.
4. Bring a fully charged phone in case of emergencies. The place is big enough that you can easily get lost.
5. Pets are allowed but they must be on a leash.
